Raven-Symoné: "I'm Tired of Being Labeled" | Where Are They Now | Oprah ...

Online Activity 2: Multiple Interpretations

Multiple Interpretations

Purpose of Assignment:

This assignment is designed to investigate how words are arbitrary until humans assign meaning to them. It also is designed as a way to explore how our words hold various connotative meanings.

Assignment Requirements:

Step 1: Please watch the following

  • Step 2:
    • Is what Raven saying the same or different from the "All Lives Matter" ideology?
    • Is what Raven saying similar and/or different from the "Don’t Say Gay" laws in Florida?
    • If our communication creates the meaning of words, what is Raven creating?

Each answer should be one paragraph long.

Step 3: After you write your paragraphs, please ask three of your classmates questions about what they wrote. The responses should be in the form of a question. For example, you would not respond to your classmate by saying you agree or disagree with them. Rather, you would ask them a question in hopes of critically analyzing the topic even more. The questions should generate conversation, and should not be designed as "quiz" questions, or questions people have to research to answer.  The questions should also be written politely.

Step 4: Answer at least 3 of the questions your peers asked to various people.  These answers should be your opinions, but please remember to be respectful during this conversation. You should also explain why your opinion is what it is, or discuss what shaped that opinion.

Your initial post is due on Thursday and your peer response is due on Tuesday by 11:59pm.
